Solar calendars are based on the Earth's orbit around the Sun, marking the passage of time through the changing seasons. On the other hand, lunar calendars rely on the Moon's phases, with months corresponding to the Moon's cycles. Most calendars blend both solar and lunar elements to strike a balance between these two celestial phenomena.
The Islamic Calendar: Measuring Time with Lunar Phases
The Islamic calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar or Lunar calendar, is a unique system utilized by Muslims worldwide to determine the timing of religious observances and events. The Islamic calendar follows a lunar pattern, consisting of 12 months in a year of either 354 or 355 days, which is shorter than the solar year. Consequently, Islamic months shift in relation to the Gregorian calendar – the calendar commonly used for civil purposes – by around 10 to 12 days each year.
The Islamic calendar begins with the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Mecca to Medina, an event known as the Hijra.
